The Nursery was opened in 1991 and is situated in the grounds of a seventeenth century farmhouse. Coles Nursery School has received the West Sussex Quality Award which recognises the quality of care and good practise in the Nursery and the dedicated work of the staff.
A typical session at the Nursery will offer a wide range of play, exploration and learning experiences for the children including; painting, craft, cooking, sand and water play, role play, singing, music and movement, free play games and story telling and many other activities incorporating the six areas of learning within the Early Years Foundation Stage. All activities and opportunities are planned and designed to include the childrens interests and their next steps of development.
Nursery Owner Susan Mortimer and her husband Tom Hendrie have expanded their business by establishing Jumping 4 Joy Ltd offering Bouncy Castle and Inflatable hire for your special occasion and Celebrationballoons4you who can supply and design balloon arrangements for every occasion. The children are encouraged to make decisions, relay messages, dress and undress themselves and to take responsibility for their personal hygiene.
We encourage the children to persevere with something that they might find difficult, we display their work and praise them for their efforts as well as their achievements. The children work in both small and large groups as well as independently. They are encouraged to share and take part in activities that teach them to be helpful and kind to others.
We encourage conversation during play activities and meal times with both adults and peers. Both Nursery buildings have a book corner where the children can enjoy books on their own or with an adult. The children are encouraged to use pencils, crayons and felt tips to make their own marks on paper. This is then developed by drawing around templates, writing in the sand and finally letter formation.
We offer the opportunity for the children to learn about the natural world and living things, by growing flowers and vegetables, caring for animals, observing the weather and seasons and carrying out simple experiments. The children take part in projects to learn about babies and family life and develop an interest in objects and living things around them. The children have regular access to our Nursery computer to learn mouse skills and understanding of technology and its uses.
The children are presented with the opportunity to understand the mathematical ideas of 2 and 3 dimensional shape, size, position and quantity by the use of construction equipment, and by activities such as junk modelling and shape making.
The children take part in number games and rhymes to encourage the recognition and ordering of numbers. The children become familiar with counting, addition and subtraction by use of number rhymes, and activities involving equipment such as the Compare Bears, weighing and measuring for cooking, and sand and water play ...
The children are given the opportunity to use construction toys, puzzles and activities such as drawing, painting, modelling, cutting and threading to help to develop their hand-eye co-ordination and fine motor skills. The children are encouraged to develop their large motor skills by taking part in running, climbing and jumping by use of large outdoor and indoor climbing frames, bikes, scooters and tricycles. Throwing skills and co-ordination are developed by playing physical games, music and movement and using equipment such as skipping ropes, balls, bean bags and hoops.
We try to stimulate the children’s imaginations by encouraging play in the home corner, dressing up and using miniature life like objects, through music, which includes singing, the use of musical instruments, circle games and through story telling and drama.
We provide a wide range of different materials to enable the children to experiment with painting, drawing, modelling and other activities which enable them to explore texture, colour, smell, shape, size and form.
